Shameem Raza speaking at mental health talk in Sri Lanka

That's me on the left!

I recently spent some time volunteering in Sri Lanka to promote women's mental health. I'm speaking about overcoming negative self-talk in this photo and it was amazing to connect with women on the other side of the world (but still facing similar wellbeing challenges).

Of course, creating connections with people hasn't always come so naturally to me.

I nearly gave up during my counselling training because I recognised negative patterns and issues in my own marriage. Having therapy for myself helped me learn what skills and strategies to implement in my own personal life. I used this knowledge to create massive improvement in how I related to my partner.

You're looking for connection with someone important to you and I get it.

Whilst I consider myself a strong individual, I broke down in floods of tears working with a young client who was in remission and then their cancer returned. I realised that I was transferring some emotions from my own cousin who was also battling cancer at the time. Once I realised what I was doing I changed my approach and it led to a memorable session that has remained with me forever.

Therapists are humans too.

So I'm usually excited about meeting a new client.

Sometimes a little bit apprehensive. I wonder if the person sat there will open up and trust me enough to share their difficult issues with me. Even 'What does my client think I am thinking?!'

However we start our relationship together, know that I find fulfilment in helping people with their relationships. Therapy can feel overwhelming but if you're curious just enough to find out, you will receive a lot of safe support as you navigate any challenges.

Let's talk
